Expressing 'bun' or a noun suffix with 子 (zi)

    Description & Modification
    Numbers & Quantity

    Structure

    Noun + 子

    Explanation

子 (zi) has two common uses: as a standalone or compound noun meaning 'steamed bun' (as in 包子), and as a grammatical suffix added to nouns such as 饺子, 桌子, and 杯子. As a suffix it is pronounced in the neutral tone and does not carry independent meaning. Context determines which usage applies.
