Explanation
去年 (qùnián) means "last year" and is a common time word placed at the beginning of a sentence or before the verb to indicate something that happened in the previous calendar year. For example, 去年夏天 means "last summer."
Examples
去年我们全家一起去了云南旅游。
Qùnián wǒmen quánjiā yìqǐ qù le Yúnnán lǚyóu.
Last year our whole family went to Yunnan for a trip together.
她去年刚从大学毕业，现在已经找到工作了。
Tā qùnián gāng cóng dàxué bìyè, xiànzài yǐjīng zhǎodào gōngzuò le.
She just graduated from college last year and has already found a job.
跟去年比，今年的房租又涨了不少。
Gēn qùnián bǐ, jīnnián de fángzū yòu zhǎng le bù shǎo.
Compared to last year, the rent has gone up quite a bit again this year.
