Expressing a change of state with 了 (le)

    Structure

    Statement + 了

    Explanation

When 了 appears at the end of a sentence, it signals a change of state or a new situation — something is now different from before. This is distinct from the verb-suffix 了 that marks completion. For example, 下雨了 means "It's raining now" (it wasn't before), and 我饿了 means "I've gotten hungry."

    Examples

    • 外面下雨了,带把伞吧。

wàimiàn xiàyǔ le, dài bǎ sǎn ba.

It's raining outside, bring an umbrella.

    • 我饿了,我们去吃饭吧。

wǒ è le, wǒmen qù chīfàn ba.

      I'm hungry, let's go eat.

    • 他现在会做饭了,以前完全不会。

tā xiànzài huì zuòfàn le, yǐqián wánquán bù huì.

He can cook now; before, he couldn't at all.
