Using the nominal suffix 儿 (ér)

    Description & Modification

    Structure

    Noun/Measure Word + 儿

    Explanation

The suffix 儿 (ér) is added to certain nouns and measure words to form a slightly different word or to add a colloquial, familiar tone, a process called 儿化 (érhuà). For example, 一会儿 means "a moment." This suffix is especially common in northern Chinese dialects and standard Mandarin, where it softens or specifies the meaning of the base word.

    Examples

    • 等我一会儿,我马上就来。

Děng wǒ yíhuìr, wǒ mǎshàng jiù lái.

Wait for me a moment; I'll be right there.

    • 小孩儿在院子里玩得很开心。

Xiǎoháir zài yuànzi lǐ wán de hěn kāixīn.

The child was playing happily in the yard.

    • 这首歌儿真好听。

      Zhè shǒu gēr zhēn hǎotīng.

This little song sounds really nice.
