A subject can be extracted from its canonical position within a clause and moved to a higher position in the sentence. This occurs in topicalization, where the subject is fronted for emphasis or contrast, or in relative clauses where the head noun corresponds to the subject of the modifying clause. The original subject position is left empty but understood.
