Using a noun phrase as a temporal adpositional phrase

    Time Expressions

    Structure

    Time NP + Verb Phrase

    Explanation

A noun phrase with inherent temporal meaning can function directly as a time expression without requiring a preposition. In Chinese, time nouns like 最近 (recently), 今天 (today), or 明年 (next year) are placed before the verb to indicate when an action occurs. This eliminates the need for a separate preposition to mark time.

    Examples

    • 最近工作太忙了,没时间休息。

Zuìjìn gōngzuò tài máng le, méi shíjiān xiūxi.

I've been too busy with work lately and haven't had time to rest.

    • 明年我打算去日本旅行。

Míngnián wǒ dǎsuàn qù Rìběn lǚxíng.

I plan to travel to Japan next year.

    • 今天下午我们开个会吧。

Jīntiān xiàwǔ wǒmen kāi ge huì ba.
