Explanation
开通 (kāitōng) means "to open" or "to inaugurate," typically used for transportation routes, communication lines, or services being put into operation for the first time. It differs from the general 开 in that it implies the launch of something new. For example, 地铁线路于2020年开通 means "The metro line was inaugurated in 2020."
