    否定 (fǒudìng) means to negate, deny, or reject. It is used when someone dismisses a claim, viewpoint, or proposal, and can function as both a verb and an adjective in Chinese.

    Examples

    • 你不能因为一次失败就否定自己所有的努力。

      Nǐ bù néng yīnwèi yī cì shībài jiù fǒudìng zìjǐ suǒyǒu de nǔlì.

      You can't negate all your efforts just because of one failure.

    • 他的提议被经理当场否定了。

      Tā de tíyì bèi jīnglǐ dāngchǎng fǒudìng le.

      His proposal was rejected by the manager on the spot.

    • 科学家用实验数据否定了这个旧理论。
