    Explanation

五言绝句 (wǔyán juéjù) is a classical Chinese poetic form consisting of four lines, each with exactly five characters. It is one of the most common forms in Tang and Song dynasty poetry. Many well-known poems taught in Chinese schools follow this compact, elegant structure.

    Examples

    • 《静夜思》是一首经典的五言绝句。

«Jìng Yè Sī» shì yī shǒu jīngdiǎn de wǔyán juéjù.

"Quiet Night Thought" is a classic five-character quatrain.

    • 五言绝句每句只有五个字,写起来很难。

Wǔyán juéjù měi jù zhǐ yǒu wǔ gè zì, xiě qǐlái hěn nán.

A five-character quatrain has only five characters per line, which makes it very hard to write.

    • 老师让我们背三首五言绝句。

Lǎoshī ràng wǒmen bèi sān shǒu wǔyán juéjù.

The teacher asked us to memorize three five-character quatrains.
