    Chinese Grammar

Expressing a friendly 'but' with 不过 (búguò)

    HSK 3
    Connecting Ideas

    Structure

    Clause₁ + 不过 + Clause₂

    Explanation

不过 means "but" or "however" with a softer, more conversational tone than 但是 or 可是. It often introduces a minor qualification rather than a strong contradiction. For example, 东西不错,不过有点贵 means "The stuff is good, but a bit expensive."

    Examples

    • 这个餐厅不错,不过要排很久的队。

zhège cāntīng búcuò, búguò yào pái hěn jiǔ de duì.

    • 他人很好,不过说话有点直。

    • 计划可以,不过细节还得再想想。
